Canon EOS-1D X Mark III review - sorry Sony, THIS the best pro camera!

  • The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is here - and while I was convinced that the Sony A9 II would be a better professional camera, I think I may have been wrong.
    With deep learning AF, an optical joystick, HEIF and HDR PQ support, CFexpress, 12-bit internal 4K RAW, head tracking, 20fps shooting and plenty more, Canon has combined the advantages of DSLR and mirrorless to produce a hybrid body that can shoot in any situation.
    Please note: These images were shot on pre-production Canon beta sample models, final image quality may vary.

    Not that I can ever afford this camera but just out of interest can somebody answer my question; with the optical view finder can you move the focus point with the thumb stick while shooting or do you have to compose your subject in the middle of the frame (or focus and recompose)? I never like focusing and recomposing because 1. it wastes time and 2. recomposing can throw of the plane of the focus. And with 20mp composing the subject in the middle of the frame and then doing a heavy crop to get the composition you're after probably isn't ideal.

    I used to lug a Canon 1d mkii and a 600 mm f/4 around, but at my age and ailments, I couldn't handle it anymore. I now own the sony a9 and the Sony 200-600 which is a lot lighter and easier for me to deal with. Let me say this, there is no perfect camera. Each has pro's and cons. The Sony a9 tracking is absolutely amazing, BUT, it will miss focus like any other camera.

    The downside of the touch sensitive pad being on the AF - On button (if you use it for back button focus as the majority of action shooters do) it that it seems you have to stop the camera from focusing in order to move the AF point around. Or am I incorrect?

    I'm not sure I'm with you on the inherent advantage of the OVF allowing you to start shooting before the EVF user next to you, but it's hard to deny this is a fantastic camera for its purpose, boasting some really cool innovations. As an A99ii shooter, I applaud the hybrid approach, as I'm still a huge believer in that, obviously! Nice review!

    • @Artaius
      @Artaius  4 года назад

      cadmus777 Thanks very much! I’m definitely an EVF guy - I think, on paper, the OVF has very real advantages. However, in actual use (which is a bit of chatter I chopped out for time), the human element compensates for the hardware, just like any tool.
      I can shoot fast action pretty reliably with a mirrorless camera, and I generally dislike OVFs, but in use it was really obvious that focus acquisition is just a hair faster on the 1D X III. But then, I shoot my usual work much faster on an EVF, because I know how to use my kit - the right tool is the one that’s right for you, at the end of the day! And I love the A9 II, it’s a real beast!

      I seriously doubt your reaction times are anywhere near the lag in a high quality evf, so it does not really make any difference when getting the shot (and you would probably be shooting in burst mode, so it literally would be the same due to the mirror getting in the way)

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 4 года назад

      @@Artaius At the speeds both cameras can react when it comes to focussing (both are faster than the maximum burst frame rate) the differences you see are more likely due to the lenses you are using and how they interact with the camera.

      Everything, except a tiny bit in Resolution.

    • @Artaius
      @Artaius  4 года назад +2

      From the 1DX to this one will be a pretty substantial improvement in almost every respect. I think you’ll really appreciate the Smart Controller for slow moving or stationary subjects in particular, and you will notice an enormous improvement in the AF, which will really help with birds in flight. The resolution may feel like status quo on paper, but the improved sharpness with the new low pass filter should be quite apparent in your shots. The improved dynamic range will also be super useful against harsh or dark skies - I think you’ll be pleased!

    Great video. Love your reviews. On a separate note, I notice you shot this on the EM5 Mark III which I've just bought and am enjoying greatly as a travel vlogging camera. This video looks so crisp, did you shoot C4K or 4K 30p? Would love to see a video on your best settings for that if you have the time. Also would really like to see some general photography videos. A youtuber called Rob Trek does great photo walk videos, I bet you would be excellent at doing something like that. Good luck with the channel, looking forward to seeing more content, appreciate how long this must have taken.

    • @Artaius
      @Artaius  4 года назад

      Cool Dudes Walking Club Thanks so much for the kind words! Actually, this was a bit of trial by fire with the E-M5 III. On my first morning before shooting, I was fiddling with some color settings while shooting something else... halfway through the track day, I realized I hadn’t changed them back, and half my footage was shot with a green color cast! So the hues are a bit off in some sections, but I rescued it okay!
      I shot in 4K 24p, as I haven’t played around with C4K very much yet. I really am very impressed with what the E-M5 III can do in terms of video though - the footage really is super crisp, and the phase detect AF makes focusing a real dream. I stick to a shutter speed of 1/50 and keep the ISO as low as possible - I don’t use a lot of filters, so I tend to control brightness with the aperture unless I specifically want shallow depth of field, in which case I’ll set up some lights. But on the go, this setup works pretty well! What settings are you using for your stuff?

    • @cdwc
      @cdwc 4 года назад +1

      @@Artaius I'm just on the 4K 30p at shutter speed of 1/60, got it set to natural profile. I was using the GH5 for my stuff before, which I still love, but hiking long distances over a few days even that got too heavy. For me I most interested in portability, stabilisation, focus and fairly decent video quality. I tested the HD but found it a bit soft, the HD Superfine looks OK. I've got the 9-18 Olympus f4.0-5.6 so the set up is super light. Anyway, thanks for answering. Well done again on the video.

    Keen on the Nikon D6 specs to compare. However, Full HD at 120 fps is on Nikon and Sony with sound, on Canon without... The worst on the a9 and a9M2 is the power on delay. It’s 5 or 6 seconds or so, a felt eternity in comparison to instant on of pro DSLRs like D500, D5, 1DXs etc...

    • @Artaius
      @Artaius  4 года назад

      Roland Rick I’m definitely very interested to see what Nikon does with the D6! There are definitely a few areas where it could get the edge, so it will be fascinating to see those specs. And you’re right about startup times - always a massive plus for DSLRs!

    -Not to mention glasses....?
    My only two gripes with thát camera is that it haven't got interchangeable focusing screens (< an "s"-type focusing screen is needed if You are to focus a lense like 85L manually, googl "Eg-S" if You don't know what I'm talking about), and that it haven't got 40 mp or more.
    -But the focusing screen is actually the bigger gripe of the two....
    Please Canon, make the perfect DSLR before You go all mirrorless, an Eos-1Ds mk 2, with an extra large optical viewfinder (with interchangeable focusing screens....;- ), 60-80 mpix, a decent ISO 1600 (< number of tones are more important), perfect eye-tracking in the optical viewfinder, 1D quality and a huge 6-7 inch screen on the rear (< which can be done by exchanging the rear dial with one going into the camera, like the one by the index-finger).

      The earlier 1D model has two processors doing handling imaging, presumably one was doing the video and the other handling focusing. This new model has only one main processor (presumably it still has the dedicated additional processor to handle the viewfinder focusing system, as is the case in the earlier 1D and 5D models). I would guess that one processor doing both video (in higher data throughout modes) and focusing is too much, so the focusing is dropped.

Since dpaf has to be done by the imaging processor, not the ovf system processor, it will create additional overhead that the mark 2 could handle separately through it's second image processor. So, while it may be faster and more capable when it comes to the image itself, there may be limitations with DPAF in heavy data situations in the mark 3.

  • @Stefan1968ful
    @Stefan1968ful 4 года назад +2

    Well, I have a different opinion on this. The sensor is from technology perspective a simple carryover from the Canon 1DX Mark II. And I am not talking about the 20MP, I am taking about a simple CMOS technology from 5 years ago. Furthermore, what is that about with 20fps? This is only in Live View, I am sorry but I have not seen anyone around me taking images in Live View of Wildlife or Action / Sport - Outdoor the display is anyway hard to read, especially in bright sunlight and especially not with such a huge and heavy housing. And through the OVF we have "only" 16fps. Sorry, if speed is important the Canon 1DX Mark III would not be my first choice. For me, Live View is basically useless, I have never really used it on my Canon 1DX Mark II. Although we have to wait on real world tests, I doubt the Autofocus will be faster than what a Sony A9 Mark II can offer because especially the Lock-On function on the A9 delivers stunning results for Wildlife, Action / Sport. I know this because this is what I am doing. The huge buffer of the 1DX Mark III is nice but...already the buffer on the 1DX Mark II was not a limiter in my work. So what is left then? My perception is that this is just a DSLR, a dinosaur from old times. Even Canon admits that their focus is RF Mount, no longer EF Mount. Let me make the prediction that anything what you currently invest into EF Mount will experience a drastic depreciation over the next 2-3 years. I was waiting on the 1DX Mark III but after this announcement I will complete my migration to Sony this year. The 1DX Mark III has nothing for my work to offer the Sony A9 Mark II can't do.

    Something does not adds right in my opinion in your review. Your video title and your conclusions seem to clearly favour the 1DXIII over the A9II. Which is fair, I can see working for a number of pros. However toward the end, where you are drawing conclusions you spend a substantial amount of time listing the A9II advantages (not a comprehensive list btw, omitting IBIS, tilting screen, and more) vs 1DXIII bigger battery, faster cards, and video specifications? Are these really that significant? I.e. I'd rather be able to look through an OVF/EVF and get close to 100% AF coverage. I liked your video and you brought up some very good points, but I think you omitted some pretty relevant stuff.

      Przemek Sensor of Canon 1DX Mark III is a simple carry over from the 1DX Mark II. I am really impressed, indeed. What an expensive bummer this 1DX Mark III is.

      Tag Team Dream Sony A9 is not a pro camera. If you ever use a 1dx or d5 you will quickly realize the difference. Just the speed of operation and control speed are so much better. You still can’t review photos as its writing to the card on a Sony the whole camera is locked up. The buffer on the 1dx ii and now this one is shocking how fast it clears and lets you just keep working. Everything with this camera is to get out of your way and let you get the shot. The sony autofocus works great when you let it choose the focus. That does not always work in all environments. When you try to use one focus point on the sony it wont focus well.

    That's why I didn't switch to Sony. I had faith in Canon and that they were only sleeping a little last year.

    Lol sorry sony?
    The a9 came out three years ago and is STILL faster in every sense than the 1dxiii. Not only that but the 1dxiii is the pinnacle of dslr world whereas the a9 is just the beginning of the mirrorless age.
    Not to say the 1dxiii isnt a great camera but its simply a better 1dxii. Whereas the a9 is a revolutionary camera that is the next step in the evolution of cameras.
    Even canon knows that. This is likely the last gasp for air from the dslr world.

      Its not faster in every sense. What everyone is saying about lag through EVFs is true.

      In which senses? The 1DX has a double the FPS with mechanical shutter, equally good autofocus, and faster card read / write speeds meaning no buffer-clearing slowdown as in the A9, which seem to me the most important speed metrics for a sports camera. I agree with you, the A9 II is a very good camera, but as you say the 1DX III is the pinnacle for sports DSLRs right now (still curious to see the D6 though). The AF algorithm can still be improved via firmware, too.
      The thing about advances in mirrorless technology is that they will improve DSLR capabilities at the same time-look at the on-sensor phase detect points in this camera, brought over from the EOS R. Or in Nikon's lineup, the D780, which during live view offers everything the Z6 has except the mount and sensor stabilization. Video quality and autofocus, the two places Nikon used to lag behind, are sorted because Nikon used what they learned from developing the mirrorless to create a better DSLR. I bought a Z6, and it's great but it's going back-I prefer the experience from the DSLR. Until the actual technical limitations of mirror speed, lens design, or sensor design PREVENT manufacturers from improving DSLRs, and as long as manufacturers keep putting some money into R&D, DSLRs will remain a viable option.

      I I agree. These people dont know what they are talking about. The Canon has no EVF and the OVF doesnt work in live view which is stupid. Massive blackout! No sound in 1080p @ 120fps. ALL the focus points are still in the middle because its a dslr and not a mirrorless camera. It's a dinosaur. In fact the biggest feature of this camera is that it is severely crippled BECAUSE its a dslr.

    Good content, especially the shots of the Radical and girl racer. Pity you sound like a primary school teacher explaining basic concepts to children*. Speed it up sunshine, we're adults with credit cards here. *during off camera narration.
